India The nation of India is only slightly greater than one-third the size of the United States, yet its population is over 1 billion compared to the U.S. population of 264 million. Overpopulation contributes significantly to extreme poverty among more than a third of the population, who are unable to afford an adequate diet. In 1995-1996, fewer than 5% of all households had an annual income of more than $2,300. India is also susceptible to droughts, flash floods, and severe thunderstorms. Massive earthquakes in recent years have further compounded the suffering of many people who barely manage to eke out a living. India's primary religion is Hindu, with Christians comprising a mere 2.4% of the population. Since 1995, LCC has supported Pastor James Jacobs, who has been instrumental in planting new churches and training pastors to lead them. In the face of severe persecution and imminent danger to his life, Mr. Jacobs has remained steadfast in his work of spreading the gospel. |
