Haiti

The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, the tiny nation of Haiti, slightly less than the state of Maryland, has been plagued by political violence for most of its history. With an inflation rate of 9% and an unemployment rate of 70%, approximately 80% of the population lives below poverty level.

Half of Haiti's 6.9 million people live in the capital, Port-au-Prince. Roman Catholic's make up 80% of the population and yet half also practice Voodoo. In a nation where AIDS runs rampant, the life expectancy is just over 49 years.

Turmoil in Haiti's government continued for three decades of dictatorship. In 1990 this nation began it's struggle for democracy with the election of Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

In spite of turbulant political times, Haiti Mission Service has prospered throughout the nation. LCC has been instrumental in working with Haiti Mission Service's 120 churches in purchasing property and erecting new church buildings. Since 1989, LCC has sent many teams to Haiti to witness firsthand the lives that have been changed and blessed.

The capital city of Port-au-Prince has no facility capable of hosting of meeting of significant size. LCC is working with Haiti Mission Service to raise $150,000 neccessary to build a convention center. This facility will host meetings of 5,000 persons. Building this convention center is an opportunity to offer the greatest gifts that can be given -- faith, hope and love. While these cannot be bought or sold at any price, this convention center will foster and increase these intangible gifts as people come together and encourage each other.
